TODAY gets a special anniversary doughnut

Dunkin' Donuts

What better way to kick off our 60th birthday bash than by chowing down a doughnut made in our honor?

TODAY turns 60 on Jan. 14, and we’re celebrating all week long. Dunkin’ Donuts has created the TODAY doughnut, a yeast ring treat featuring vanilla icing and red, yellow and orange sprinkles, on sale at participating locations from today through Jan. 15.

From kneading the dough to icing and sprinkles, step inside Dunkin' Donuts University to see how this special treat, honoring the show's 60 anniversary on TV, is created.

“Dunkin’ Donuts and TODAY share a unique place in Americans’ daily lives. For more than 60 years our coffee and baked goods and their news and entertainmeanniversarynt have both been an important ritual for Americans starting their morning and getting themselves running throughout the day,” said John Costello, chief global marketing and innovation officer at Dunkin’ Brands.

Dunkin' Donuts executive chef Stan Frankenthaler presents the TODAY anchors with a special doughnut cake in honor of the show's 60 anniversary on TV.

And, of course, just one doughnut isn’t enough. Dunkin’ Brands’ executive chef Stan Frankenthaler stopped by the plaza to show off the TODAY doughnut cake, made with several doughnuts and Munchkins (currently trending on Twitter, thankyouverymuch).

“I don’t know whether to thank you or hate you,” said Matt, on behalf of all of us fighting to keep our resolutions.

TODAY

Al got the crowd involved, throwing them doughnuts and shouting, “Arm yourselves with frosting!”

I just watched the segment with Dunkin Doughnuts and am appalled at the behavior of Al Roker throwing doughnuts on the ground as if this gesture by the Dunkin Doughnuts Corporation was a trashy event! Sharing them with the crowd since the Today Show team is sooooo concerned with their on air "looks" is one thing, but Al's behavior was beyond acceptable. At the very least he should apologize to the very nice man from Dunkin Doughnuts who went to all the trouble of providing that presentation as a gift. It was obvious no one gave any thought to say "thank you" and appreciate this present! No wonder the word "respect" is rapidly becoming obsolete.

He can't eat the doughnuts and he's mad! I bet that's why he did it... With a smile on his face.

My very first retail purchase of my entire life (so far) was the purchase of a Duncan Donuts doughnut. It was 1954 or 1955 I was just 5 years old and Duncan Donuts built a brand new store on Northern Boulevard in Roslyn, New York. We lived in the Flower Hill neighborhood and as a young kid I liked exploring the neighborhood. No one had ever heard of Duncan Donuts and so when they built this store it had a 'window' to look inside to watch how they made their donuts it was the greatest thing since ice cream to a 5 year old kid. The store is still there today although it no longer has the window for peeking inside! Its been decades since I've bought a doughnut there, perhaps I should return.................a good story for the Today Show?

Al Roker is NOT a class act!!!!! He was so rude to wheel the Dunkin Doughnuts cart immediately over to the audience (almost knocking the tower over) and then letting people get their hands on the doughnuts, then throwing them out to the audience! He is like a bull in a china shop! The poor rep from Dunkin Doughnuts didn't even know how to react! I think Al Roker ows an apology to Dunkin Doughnuts for his behavior! Thumbs down for Al Roker!!!!!

I never blog but just had to. Im home sick today and when I saw Al Roker carelessly pulling the the cart with the towering stack of sweets then tossing the donuts after Dunkin Doughnuts made such an effort to honor the show aroused an opinion worth speaking about. It didnt look good at all. Im guessing Mr. Roker is fighting his own demons when it comes to food today and it showed this morning. Work on that Mr. Roker. I hope the guests or the representative from Dunkin Doughnuts did not feel as offended as I was for them. Thanks.

Al Roker has become very rude to the pastry chefs that visit the Today show. Now that he has become a healthier person he has mocked and belittled pastry chefs more and more. This is too clear to viewers now.

Calm Down Al and report the weather please thank you

I have always liked Al Roker ... until recently ... I get a feeling now that he feels that he can do or say anything ... and then laff it off .... Not Good ... this morning was one such occassion .. I actually felt bad for the representative from Dunkin Donuts who rolled out a display of special Dunkin Donuts made to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the TODAY Show .... Al acted like a real JERK ... throwing the donuts into the crowd, etc ... and the representative of Dunkin Donuts was speechless ..... I did not think it was FUNNY .... It was a classless act by Mr. Roker .... I think his boss should speak to him and tell him to simmer down !!!!! .... and get some CLASS back.

What a rude & classless thing to do.

I hope his boss has a talk with him, he's been acting like a fool for a long time now!

Al, Al, how horribly rude! In fact all of the host were ungrateful and rude. Why make comments about calories and putting them straight on their thighs! Do they have no appreciation for how much trouble that Duncan Donuts guy went through for their show? It would seem their heads have gotten over inflated.
