Bourdain kind of regrets 'crass' comments about Deen

Hothead Anthony Bourdain isn’t apologizing for his war of words with Food Network darling Paula Deen, but he kinda, sorta regrets coming off like a jerk.

“You know, I deserved the whacking I got back on that,” he said on NPR’s Leonard Lopate Show on Monday. “I hate to beat up on her personally … I love butter. I feel bad — I stand by the substance of what I said but I certainly think it came across as more crass, personal and just plain nasty than I intended it.”

“That said, is it necessary to serve bacon cheeseburger between two donuts? Is that what America needs right now?”

Bourdain recently told TV Guide that Deen was "the worst, most dangerous person to America," who "revels in her unholy connections with evil corporations" and is "proud of the fact that her food is f---ing bad for you."

Deen fired back, telling the New York Post that "Anthony Bourdain needs to get a life."

TODAY.com readers overwhelmingly sided with Deen in this feud and some food world heavyweights, including The New York Times’ Frank Bruni, chastised Bourdain for his scathing comments.

Do you think Bourdain redeemed himself? Weigh in!

After proving he has "No Reservations" about criticizing Food Network celebrity chefs, "Kitchen Confidential" bad boy Anthony Bourdain says he's happy to let Paula Deen have the last word in their recent fiery feud. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports

We're all big boys and girls here in America--we all know that eating a steady diet of butter and sugar while slathering everything in gravy and cheese sauce is NOT good for you and shouldn't be part of your everyday diet. Paula herself has said, "We don't eat fried chicken every day in the south. We save that for Sunday meals." By the way Mr. Bourdain, drinking like a frat boy ain't good for you either. Talk about empty calories! That aside, even though Americans are the fattest, unhealthiest people on the planet, we all have to be responsible for our own health problems. Yes, we should eat healthier (and less) and exercise more. There's nothing saying that once or twice a month on Sunday you can't sit down to Fried Chicken, greens, mashed potatoes and gravy annd macaroni and cheese with an apple pie chaser.

Mr. Bourdain chastises himself for his behavior, he recognizes when he's being irresponsible and says "don't try this at home". He's honest. Paula is very dishonest. She stated she talks about moderation-well she may talk about it but she sure doesn't practice it. She just encourages everyone to shove whipped cream, butter, mashed potatoes and anything with carmel into your mouth for the pure enjoyment-immediate gratification. She reminds me of a 5 year old sitting in front of a gallon of ice cream without parents around. Do you think that child will stop at 2 or 3 spooonfuls? No, the gallon is gone. That's my take on Paula. Paula, put down the spoon. Take a walk and get healthy for yourself and your family.

You must never watch her show cause she admits its not health some of the stuff she makes. She also tells you she likes her butter and you could use less. Also if you let the child eat the whole gallon your not being a good parent and watching what you let your child shovels down their mouth. Get life people start blaming people for weight problems. You also choose to make her recipes she does not tell you to go make it. I can offical say america blames everyone for their problems other then the person in the mirror. Wake up America start using your brain and start making health choses on your own and stop blaming everyone!!!!!

I adore Anthony Bourdain. That curmudgeonly personality is his stock in trade. People shouldn't take his remarks so seriously. I mean, yeah, he meant it, and yeah, he used stronger language than he should have, and yeah, I'm sure he feels bad that it came across the way it did. But that's the way he talks. He says snarky things about every country/city he visits and consistently jeers at things other people like. It's almost a knee-jerk reaction for him -- if most people enjoy something, he goes out of his way to hate it. He frequents sections of town that other people avoid, and eats things that make most people shudder. Ms. Deen may be the one who needs to get a life.

I laughed when I read both of their remarks. There is a lot of truth to Anthony Bourdain's words though maybe not in the most polite fashion. But, since when is he known for his polite and eloquent speech. I love for one love Anthony Bourdain and his outspokenness.

We, in the south of France, most likely eat many more calories than Mme Paula Deen, but our obesity rate is only 11%. This is the lowest rate in all of Europe.

Maybe the problem is not the type of food Mme Deen prepares, but the lifestyle of those who eat it.

I believe the life style in the US is detremental to our health as well. However the economies in Europe have necessitated the lifestyles many people their lead as opposed to having chosen.

Oh for crying out loud...does not one follow the old saying "different strokes for different folks". Paula Deen isn't contributing to obesity...she isn't shoveling food down the throats of overweight people. She cooks what she likes, what she grew up with, and her larger than life personality is so engaging, I love to watch her shows...doesn't mean I eat like her. I also watch Anthony Bourdain's shows...doesn't mean I eat what he does either. These people are TV personalities...not surgeon generals....

I liked Paula 10 yrs ago before anyone else liked her. Now Her laugh makes me cringe, her sons can only get jobs from Food TV or hanging around on her show and I am tired to death of all of them. She talks about moderation - I have seen this woman pack tablespoons full of whipped cream or butter or mashed potatoes full of sour cream into her mouth time after time. Is it a big shock to anyone that Paula has diabetes? It would be a shock to me if she didn't!

Well said Mamom! and for Pete's sake Joann....just turn the TV off if you don't want to watch or hear her talk girl, really!! Or better yet, change it to the weather chanel! You obviously need a life. Paula Deen is the kindest, most giving and sacrificing person and has stayed that way in spite of her success with her show on Food Network! Read what Mamom says above and I hope you get it this time! The Food chanel has to diversify and Southern cooking is just what it is...but you don't have to eat it all the time or at all! God Bless you Paula..you go girl and make whatever you want and keep up that walking and try using Splenda instead of sugar in that sweet tea. Also, proud you all are trying some new recipes..love Bobby's show!! Hey Joann, bet you didn't like Julia Childs either..hee hee!

Again, I loved her 10 years ago. She was a cook. Now she is a "personality" who has to have guests to cook with. 10 years ago, this lovely lady would have admitted she had diabetes and not cared about her "image". Now its like a big secret she had to keep so people wouldn't say what they are saying now. Splenda is chemically altered sugar and our bodies are not equipped to process it. A teaspoon of real sugar has about 15 calories. She can add a cup of splenda to her pudding but it's still full of milk fat. I live in the south not far from Smithfield-The hog capital of the world. She is making a fortune as their Spokeswoman-pure pork sausage, chops, country ham, fat back, will kill you. If you watch her show you will see Paula cares more about her income potential than her fans.

Bourdain found out he is not quite as well loved in the minds of the American people as he is in his own mind. Kind of sucks to eat humble pie doesn't it...especially if it is wrapped in butter and bacon and served between two donuts. Plenty of rumors about about Bourdains drinking problems, when he cleans up his own act then he can take on Deens butter habit. Til then...have another piece of humble pie...might do you a world of good.

If Anthony wants to drink, let him drink-he's not driving a car or performing brain surgery. Paula is known to be able to throw down a few too! Only she chases it with Butter, donuts and whipped cream.

Several years ago I quit watching Anthony Bourdain. He is so irritating with his know-it-all personality. Now watching Paula is like being in the kitchen with a friend. We all know her recipes are artery-clogging, but, hey, in today's world we know how to make those recipes more healthy. We all joke about reading a recipe and making comments like "Paula Deen would love this". The key to a healthy life is "everything in moderation". My parents lived into their 90's following that advice. It's all about making trade-offs.

I have to totally agree with Anthony ... while admitting I was born, raised and live in Savannah, GA (38 years), and love my southern food ... once in a very blue moon (New Years, Easter, Thanksgiving, & Christmas)! Her show is not something to watch for your everyday meal ideas .. or even once a week, so you would most likely be much better off watching Racheal Ray for sure. I have to be honest... and I hope this doesnt hurt Sav tourism (because I love visitors and Savannah is an absolutely wonderful place to be), but Paula Deans "Lady & Sons" (from here referred to as L&S) is the absolute last restaurant I would go to as a resident or a visitor with Uncle Bubba's being a close second to last. If I really want a taste of good old southern home cooking and dont feel like cooking it myself, I go to Mrs. Wilkes instead of L&S where the collards and pot roast are untouchable in flavor, a spoonfull of Banana Pudding takes care of your sweet craving for a month and I wont even get started on the squash, yams, cabbage and sweet potatoes. I could go on and on, but even though Mrs. Wilkes herself has long passed away, they have done a wonderful job of keeping the quality... the food remains classic, delicious, and a super special treat when any of the dishes hit my tastebuds. I've been to L&S twice, and have yet to taste anything that I havent had better from my mom's table, my own, or a friends. Dont get me wrong, I am happy for PD for making it from when she was handing out sandwiches on a streetcorner, but fame really has gone to her head... and many tourists' waists. People stand in line for hours, to taste bland fried chicken, yams that taste better canned off the grocery shelf... along with okra, lima beans, and green beans that possibly may come canned or at least frozen. The real south is unique in the fact that the taste of food is absolutely above all else when serving a meal... regardless of the heart attack sitting in front of you... but there are much healthier ways to do so and at the same time make it taste better than L&S. i.e. cook collards in low sodium bouillon cubes (chicken or beef), small amount of seasalt (goes much further), saute minced garlic, onions, mushrooms ... then throw well drained collards in and cook for a minute or two over low heat, serve. Dont throw out the water from boiling the collards, it is packed with nutrients and makes a great broth for soups or marinades, use peppers if you want to spice it up. Bottom line, southern cooking does not have to be the PD's way, anyone can make it better and much less fattening with a little experimenting, even healthy. I do have to say, a few of her marinades are great in small quantities to add flavor to a dish .. but thats about it. For a good low country boil skip L&S... check out the Crab Shack or ask any local on the street when visiting. 1 out of every 5 will be able to give you a recipe better than what you will get at L&S and its simply when to add what. L&S is overcooked and not made with local, fresh, sweet shrimp. Our local shrimp, oysters, and crab would make even Anthony Bourdain's tongue slap him across the face if cooked by most long term residents of Savannah so why they are not used at L&S is beyond me. Southern cooking as a whole by no means fits under the Paula Dean cooking, we love our fresh seafood and veggies... we can make the flavor pop without it taking a tub of lard, pound of butter, or bag of white flour to make it taste good.

I love Paula Dean and have learned alot from watching her. I just make a few substitutions to make a recipe more heart healthy when needed for my personal use. I'm so tired of everyone judging others and cramming their beliefs down the throats of those who don't agree with them, and it truly is a sad day in America, indeed in the world, when people take pleasure in learning of someone's health issues and say they have it coming to them. My prayers go out to Paula in this very private health matter and shame on those who read the Enquirer and spread rumors and I agree with Paula. "Get a life!"

Oh SavannahMom...how much did the "other resturants" pay you for that commercial..REALLY! Do you have any idea what is used to prepare ANY dish, much less a SOUTHERN dish? I bet you microwave all your tofu! YES, we all love our veggies and seafood, but would you know how to cook a real meal? Really...your "long commentary" says to all of us..you just pick up Lean Quisines every day. :) Next time you head to Mrs. Wilkes...find out what was put in everything sweetie....BUTTER and probably lots of fat back!

Bourdain should not have to feel bad about his remarks regarding Paula Deen's cooking methodology. I agree with him. I sometimes turn the channel when she is cooking, because it makes me ill to see how much butter she uses in her meals. Basically, I have lost my appetite for Paula Deen's cooking. I am Type 2 Diabetes. So Bourdain don't beat up on yourself for simply telling the truth. If Paula Deen can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen! No disrespect intended.

Nobody is forcing you to watch or cook/eat her food. Watch your mouth...there is no need to disrespect someone elses way of cooking...or living. You need to get a life instead of going around bad mouthing people. Everyone eats different...and lives different! Are you going to say a chinese person is wrong for eating cooking chinese food? What about Italian people cooking Italian food? What about Mexican people cooking Mexican food??

Styles of food all depends on your culture...Italian,mexican,african,german,chinese,french,etc.....They all have there benefits and they all have their "sins"

Get a life and stop bad mouthing people.

The way she cooks is the way she knows...its how she was brought up.

Her food is beyond amazing!! I support her!

I am glad for another celebrity's frank comments. Why be nice about poison pudding? It's crazy to say, oh well, I only each trash once a week. And frankly, I don't believe her. Bourdain should stop hating on Ms. Paula! Ms. Paula has own her cooking style, and in moderation as she has said should be ok for us who like her type of cooking every once in awhile. As a person who has taken off about 60 pounds in the past couple of years, I know that eating in moderation is the key to better health. Ms. Paula hang in there and I know you will be alright, God bless!

Everyone has a right to thier opinion when it copmes to food, and both Paula and Anthony bring some skills to the culinary table in their own way.

Interesting no one has chimed in on the "unholy connections with evil corporations". Apparently she waited three years to announce, and just in time for a big deal with the Big Pharma. Her face is on everything these days, and it's hard to imagine she anything to do with actual product development, recipes, etc. She's making huge $$$ for a smile and an accent, and in some cases the facts she presents are absolutely untrue.

While I find Paula Deen's cooking atrocious and her family insipid, the arrogance of Bourdain is more insulting. Most of the "off the beaten track" cuisine is probably mediocre at best and to revel in the gastronomic excellence is disingeniuous at best.

Bourdain is a hypocrite! He's an alcoholic, a 2 pack a day smoker and has used drugs. And he's talking about healthy lifestyles!? That's rich! He can't even be honest about being gay for petes sake. Paula Deen has always taught moderation and there is no reason if most of your diet is healthy you can't have that piece of cake but the problem is most American's diets are way too high in fat, sugar & salt. Most of which comes from eating out and conveinence foods.

Anthony Boredom is a pompous schmuck. Personally, I wouldn't touch the food from those filthy roadside peddlers which he claims are so eclectic and cosmopolitan. Where does a street peddler wash his hands Tony - you imbecile.
